In April last year I was privileged to visit Israel with a party of people from All Saints. Some of the party I knew very well, others I only really knew by sight but what a wonderful place to go to get to know these people better.
Looking back, and this I have done many times, certain things stand in my mind and I think always will do. The first was our visit to the Western (Wailing) Wall. What a moving experience this was, to pray at the site where Jewish people have prayed for thousands of years.
The second was at a service in St Georges’s Cathedral. I was next to an Arab lady and we were singing a well know hymn, she was singing in Arabic while I sang in English, this was replicated throughout the church. To many it would have sounded awful but as I sang I couldn’t help but feel what a beautiful sound it must be to the Lord.
Our visit to Capernaum, the place where Jesus spent so much of his time was for me the highlight of the whole trip. To actually see the houses and streets where Jesus walked and talked was something I will never forget. Seeing this town brought so much of the New Testament to life in a way which I would never have imagined.
Before we left some of our party asked our guide what we could do to help the Christians in Israel. His reply, come and visit us. Much of the work available to Christians in Israel is tourism so to visit Israel is to bring much needed work to our fellow believers in that country.
